Delta

Delta
by Adrienne Rich
If you have taken this rubble for my past
raking though it for fragments you could sell
know that I long ago moved on
deeper into the heart of the matter
If you think you can grasp me, think again:
my story flows in more than one direction
a delta springing from the riverbed
with its five fingers spread

Mississippi Cotton-Pickin’ Delta Town

Recently I’ve developed a kind of fascination with cotton. It’s so pretty in the fields, where endless rows of fluffy cotton make it seem like winter came early and snowed all over the place. It’s also just very culturally and historically significant; cotton plantations made the Old South what it was and are (at least…

From Four Until Late

WOW it’s been awhile. For those of you following along at home, I’m sorry I’ve been so terrible about keeping you updated (or if I’ve failed to respond to texts/emails/carrier pigeons). For those of you just joining us, I’m not really sure why I’m writing this paragraph like this is a radio show. I still…

Skrawberry Fields Forever

Before we had ever met them, my collab decided to name our students “Straight-A Scholars” because we expected them to “Act Appropriately” and “Achieve Academically.” Little did we know that in the Mississippi Delta, the “str-” sound is pronounced “skr-.” Our “Straight-A Scholars” refer to themselves as “Skraight-A Scholars.” I think this is adorable, but…

(Station) Wagon Wheel

I’m currently sitting in my parents’ basement surrounded by literally every earthly possession I own, trying to decide what to bring with me for Institute, what to leave for after Institute, and what to get rid of entirely. It’s amazing to me how much junk, crap, clutter, and just general STUFF I’ve managed to acquire…

Interview

I had a Skype interview with a school in Arkansas today! The good news: I thought it went pretty well, I smiled a lot and was myself, and I think I explained my answers thoroughly. The bad news: I found out about the interview an hour before it happened, after pulling an all-nighter to finish…

Graceland (and an introduction)

So I have been reading and enjoying these blogs for about two months now, and I think it’s only fair that I write one post so that I can introduce myself to anyone I’ve left a comment.  I don’t think I will start regularly writing anything until I start Institute in June, but the blank…
